26-27 Elements of the Universe: Elementary Chemistry (9am)
$20.00

Cost: $120 per semester

*eligible for ESA funding; plans to become a Braintree vendor

Class Description:

Let’s explore the elements of the universe together in a fun, active, hands-on approach to learning chemistry. Wanna blow stuff up with me? How about making a rocket blast off in our acids and bases lab? We’ll definitely learn the chemical formula for a fart! Along the way we’ll learn the periodic table, about noble gases, and about those wild and crazy little electrons that spin and bounce around like a sugared-up kid! This class is designed to give students a love for chemistry and science in general.

Students will do assigned reading at home and meet in class for all the messy, fun, and academic projects that will drive key concepts home. We’ll review reading and cover key topics in class. Engaging activities, songs, games, and models are the meat and potatoes of this class. We’ll memorize as much of the periodic table as we can by jumping rope and singing our song in class. By the end of this year, your child will have a solid understanding of the chemical world, and have had a blast learning it.

Homework: Homework is geared to be about 30 minutes of reading time, and 5 minutes of practicing a song a few times a week.

26-27 Math Help Hub
$20.00

Cost: $60 per semester

*eligible for ESA funding; plans to become a Braintree vendor

Class Description:

This class is designed to support both the parent and child in their at-home instruction of math. Students should use Math U See Curriculum, at either Epsilon, Zeta or Pre-Algebra levels. If your student is new to Math U See, you can have them do a placement test to see which level best suits them. Placement - Math-U-See

We’ll begin the year all together, starting at Lesson 1. I’ll give the instruction for the lesson, and help students begin assignment A by group, then move on to the next level or students. Students may work through one or more assignments in class with their group as I go around checking for understanding after all lessons have been given. I will ask students to refer back to their teacher’s manual to refresh themselves on a lesson or to check their work on assignments A-E. Inevitably, as the year progresses and students work at their own pace, some students will move faster than the standard pace, and others will need more time. I find it helpful to try to keep an average of keeping up with 1 unit a week, using the breaks to catch up if needed. By that method, students will achieve 24 units of their math curriculum during our class schedule.

Homework: Homework for this class should be daily, 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your student and their level. In the course of a week, one entire unit should be completed, lessons A-D and test. Homework and tests should be graded at home. Use the tests and unit tests to provide your grades so that the practice pages can be practice. Please do not do lesson F, unless your student bombs the test. This gives us the opportunity to reteach and try again. Honors lessons are at your discretion as a parent. Additionally, there will be Unit tests. Complete them as you would a unit test.

Non graded by instructor. Grades should be kept at home, based on the tests and unit tests. If you would like a copy of the sheet I use to track my own students at home, please email me.

*eligible for Braintree funding

Class Description:

Before you can become a good writer, you must become a good thinker!  Welcome to the Lost Tools of Writing!  In this class, students will combine literature, critical thinking, and writing skills as they learn to master the art of the persuasive essay.  They will also learn how to organize their thoughts into outlines, add stylistic techniques that make their writing interesting, and format papers properly.  While the persuasive essay is the focus of this class, these skills will easily translate into other writing tasks.

Students will read high-quality novels, such as The Hiding Place, Where the Red Fern Grows, and The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.  Then they’ll use issues the characters face in these books to write essays detailing whether or not a character should have made a particular choice.  We’ll learn how to write a good thesis statement, support it with proofs and sub-proofs, consider counter-theses, and who these issues would apply to in the wider world, plus so much more.

By the end of the year, students who use the Lost Tools of Writing will not only be better writers, but better thinkers who are able to consider the claims and actions of others in a critical, thoughtful, reasoned way.
