Class Description:

This year we will delve into castles, kings, queens, wars, the Black Plague, and so much more! Students may use either Story of the World or The Story of Civilization as a spine for this class. After reading required history and literature assignments at home, students will participate in lively discussions of the material, do mapping and hands-on activities to enhance learning and bring history alive for the students.

Grades: 1st-5th

Instructor: Grace Johnston

Time: 10:00-11:00am

Required materials: (Choose 1) Story of the World Volume 2: The Middle Ages OR Story of Civilization Volume 2: The Medieval World

Optional Reading:

1st Semester

  • Beowulf, A Hero's Tale by James Rumford or any book on Beowulf *

  • Margarite Makes a Book by Bruce Robertson

  • Any book about King Arthur *

  • Alfred the Great by Brenda Williams

  • The Knight and The Dragon by Tomie DePaola or any book on knights

  • The Hawk of the Castle by Danna Smith

  • Castle by David Macaulay

  • Any book about Robin Hood *

  • Genghis Khan by Demi

2nd Semester

  • Any book on Saint Francis

  • Joan of Arc by Diane Stanley (more appropriate for older elementary students) or any book on Joan of Arc *

  • Columbus by D'Aulaire or any book on Columbus

  • Stone Giant by Jane Sutcliffe or any book on Michelangelo

  • I Galileo, by Bonnie Christensen or any book on Galileo

  • William Shakespeare and the Globe by Aliki or any book on Shakespeare Cathedral by David Macaulay

* If you are also registering a child for Middle School Medieval History and Literature, they will share the same core history curriculum, and some of their literature options will align, particularly those marked with an asterisk. If you would rather read the middle school options as family read-aloud instead of purchasing multiple versions of the same book, that is a great option.
