Cost: $120/semester

Class Description:

This class is for both the avid and reluctant reader! We will spend a whole semester diving into some of the fictional work of C.S. Lewis and J.R. Tolkien, who are both giants in modern mythology and legendary tales. We will also explore the friendship of those two authors, learn about how they affected each other’s writing, and how their writing styles were similar and different.

Two of the books required, Till We Have Faces and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, are modern retellings of classical myths and legends. Out of the Silent Planet is part one of Lewis’ famous sci-fi trilogy, and The Mythmakers is a fun graphic novel about the relationship between Lewis and Tolkien.

This class will feel more like a book club, which will allow your budding philosopher and literary critic to learn through self-expression and engagement. Through guided discussion, students will learn literary terms and themes, while coming into their own opinions regarding great works of literature. The goal is to thoroughly understand, and hopefully fall in love with, the books we read.

Students should expect to spend 3-4 hours a week reading and/or writing. Some of the books will conclude with a related creative writing assignment. Students are expected to participate in class discussion, as this is the way the teacher assesses their completion and understanding of the text. This course is eligible for high school credit.

Lauren Andrews has her B.A. in English and Philosophy, and one of her very favorite things to do is to discuss books, especially with young people.

Please also note that we are reading adult literature, which contains some adult themes and content. If you have any concerns about content, please contact the teacher to discuss options.
