Brain Builders

$20.00

Cost: $90/semester plus material costs of $37.50 per semester, to be paid directly to the teacher.

Class Description:

Anyone can improve his or her ability to learn, no matter how cognitively challenged or gifted that individual may be.

Professor Reuven Feuerstein once said, “Our brains are built by the tasks that we impose on them.” Unlike experts of his day who believed that intelligence is an unchangeable trait which people inherit, Professor Feuerstein viewed intelligence as a state which can be positively developed in all individuals through a series of intentionally structured and continuously changing learning experiences that are offered by a trained mediator.

This year long course is designed to offer the array of novel and increasingly challenging tasks students in grades 6 and up need in order to help their brains begin to build:

-conscious control of 28 skills called cognitive functions that their brains are capable of using as strategies for problem-solving & successful learning in any area of life

-knowledge of what questions to ask in order to figure out what to do when instructions aren’t given and task demands are unfamiliar

-a growing openness to embracing challenge, and more.

In addition to systemically building cognitive functions needed to problem-solve and learn in life, as students progress through the tasks in this course they will also learn how to be metacognitive thinkers who know how to think about their thinking in a way that empowers them to reverse engineer successes and/or problem-solve what went wrong in their thinking processes when struggles or failures occur.

Course materials which will be utilized are components of Feuerstein’s Instrumental Enrichment program, which has been successfully employed for decades to help individuals with all sorts of abilities and needs (ADHD, Dyslexia, Traumatic Brain Injury, Autism, Giftedness and more) in countless countries around the world.

The instructor for this class will be Greta Ehlers. Greta is an International Trainer for the Feuerstein Institute of Jerusalem, Israel who helped Dr. Jeanne Zehr found The MindCAP Center in Fort Wayne, IN. Greta currently works on contract for The MindCAP Center as their Lead Feuerstein Trainer while also homeschooling her youngest son, Yihun, who is a brain-injury survivor adopted from Ethiopia.

Grades: 6th-12th

Greta wants parents to know that they are welcome to register as participants along with their learners if they would like to work on growing their own thinking, learning, planning, and problem-solving skills. Anyone who wants to learn how to take hold of the reins of their intelligence is welcome!
